About the Kea & Kākā
The Kākā (Nestor meridionalis) is one of New Zealand's treasured native forest parrots. With its rich earthy colouring and lively personality, it plays an important role in maintaining healthy forests by feeding on nectar, fruits, seeds and insects, helping to pollinate native plants and disperse seeds throughout the bush.
The Kea (Nestor notabilis) is the world's only alpine parrot and is found in the mountains of Te Waipounamu (South Island). Famous for its intelligence and curiosity, the Kea has become one of New Zealand's most recognised native birds.
